A Stellar Space-Themed Sustainability Gala
How Cohera transformed Adler Planetarium into a cosmic, future-forward gala that merged space exploration, sustainability, and extraordinary guest experiences.
The Challenge
Our client came to us with a clear vision. They wanted an evening that blended the excitement of space exploration with a message about environmental responsibility.
But beyond everything else? They wanted it to feel genuine for a crowd of high-level, well-traveled guests who have seen just about everything.
For us, that meant creating an experience that could carry real meaning without losing the sense of discovery that makes Adler Planetarium such a compelling venue. On top of that, the program needed to move across two different Chicago institutions and still feel connected from start to finish.
So the challenge became clear: how do you build an evening that encourages reflection, curiosity, and stays engaging at every turn?
The Strategy
We approached the evening as if it were a mission launch. Before the main event, 700 guests, including top leaders and CEOs, attended a VIP viewing of “The Blue Paradox” at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.
Our take? One historic space-themed venue just wasn’t enough. Part two of the night was about to begin.
When they arrived at the Adler Planetarium, guests were welcomed by astronaut performers and guided through a shuttle-style entry that set the tone the moment they arrived.
Each space within the planetarium was designed to feel like another phase of a journey through the cosmos, with lighting, sound, and pacing shifting in subtle ways to keep the experience moving forward.
After all, who doesn’t love feeling like they’re moving through the space time continuum?
Our Chicago logistics team channeled Houston ground control for this event. While guests explored the environment, we were coordinating timing, flow, and transitions across multiple zones of the venue. This kept the night steady and allowed the story to unfold naturally while our staff handled the technical choreography that made it all possible.
Interactive activations kept everything hands-on and interesting. Guests engaged with robotics demonstrations, molecular mixology, and sustainability showcases that tied the theme of exploration back to the real-world responsibility of caring for the planet.
Entertainment supported the narrative instead of interrupting it. Sketch bots created custom portraits. The electric violinist added energy with a synth-forward sound. A living hoop performer evoked Saturn’s rings with their abstract dance.
The night concluded in the Solarium, where the Chicago skyline framed a dinner experience led by Chef Richard Blais of Top Chef fame. Creative techniques such as liquid nitrogen and plant-forward experimentation built on the theme of science and forward thinking. Guests left with signed cookbooks and a final moment overlooking the water and city lights.
